TROGIR (Croatia)

20/01/2026

What to see in Trogir and is it worth visiting? Definitely! Read more

Trogir is located in the southern part of Croatia, in the Dalmatian region, directly on the Adriatic coast. The historic center of the city is located on a small island, which is connected by bridges to the mainland and the island of Čiovo. The city has approximately 13-14 thousand inhabitants and is one of the smaller but very important Croatian destinations. Only about 25 kilometers east lies Split, the second largest city in Croatia, which can be easily reached from Trogir by car, bus and boat.

Another great advantage is the proximity of Split Airport, which is located only 5-6 km from the center of Trogir, which makes it an ideal place even for a short stay.

Trogir

Trogir is one of the few places in Europe where more than 2,000 years of history meet in a few hundred meters. The small stone town lies on an islet between the mainland and the island of Čiovo, and its entire historic center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Narrow streets, Romanesque and Renaissance palaces, and the impressive Cathedral of St. Lawrence create an atmosphere that resembles a living open-air museum.

And although Trogir seems calm and timeless, just a few steps to the sea and you will find yourself in a world of beaches, boats, and Mediterranean life.

If you need a ride from the airport or to get from place to place, let me recommend Kiwitaxi. You order in the app, you see the price right away and a luxury car will come to pick you up, usually for more than 4 people. With my discount code, it's almost the same price as a regular taxi. Code in the Kiwitaxi article.

Accommodation Villa Gala 4*

We stayed at Vila Gala 4* - in the Okruh Gornji part of Trogir.

Luxuriously equipped with 5 apartments and a swimming pool, on a hill above the sea with a view, about 3 km from the historic center. If you want to walk, it's about 45 minutes. You can go straight down from the villa and walk around the sea. When you reach the Rožac campsite (there is only 1 campsite on the way), follow the road, soon there will be a sign with an arrow Shortcut for pedestrians (Špira Puovića street) up a decent hill, but at least you don't go on the main road, there is no sidewalk. You can't walk around the sea the whole way even if you don't want to take a shortcut. If you don't want to walk, I'll give you some advice, we only found out about it on the way back. There are water taxis to the Okrug Gornji part twice an hour. They are small motor boats with a shelter for about 20 people. You can find them in the port of the same name - Okrug Gornji. If you were to leave our villa, take the street Put Lokvice - it's down and diagonally to the right under the villa, and you'll come out right at the pier. One ride costs 5 Euros per person. In Trogir, this taxi stands right in front of the Kamerlengo fortress, right at the beginning. There are lots of stalls offering boat trips there, so ask them if you want. There are also several restaurants in the port. The one on the very edge - Kapasanta, closest to your departure point, was also quite cheap, we didn't see a beer under 4 Euros anywhere in the entire 14 days.

I recommend not taking a regular taxi. For the 3 km he wanted 15 Euros, which is the minimum fare. Uber is a lot cheaper, around 6 Euros, and a water taxi 5 Euros per person. And it took about 15 minutes.

Own experience

The historic center is on an island (connected to the mainland by a bridge) and is not very big. You can easily get lost in the narrow streets. We looked for a nice restaurant, off the main street, in a completely forgotten street, and then we couldn't find it because everything looks the same, but we finally found it, so I recommend it to you. The center is full of restaurants, small boutiques, you can buy jewelry, souvenirs, the most popular thing here was probably clothes. There is a large selection of beautiful linen clothes. I recommend having cash because of the bargains.

My travel hack - if you live further from the historic center like we do in Okrug Gornji, you can use a boat taxi for 5 Euros per person, the journey time is about 15 minutes. There are a lot of these boat taxis there and each one goes to a different place, ours had Okruh Gornji directly written on the boat, but some don't have anything there, so it's better to ask someone. You get on at the port at the entrance to the city and they will take you to the beach near your accommodation. It was 3 km on foot.

Restaurant and ice cream tips in Trogir

7 palm ice cream, a short walk from the main square, cafe.

Restaurant Marijana - in a hidden alley, but worth it, probably there will be no crowds. They have meat, fish, seafood, pasta, grilled specialties, salads, cold appetizers, soups, hot appetizers, steaks, desserts... it's a shame I couldn't taste everything, I was tempted by many dishes there. The lady who served us was very nice and helpful, we sat there pleasantly in the shade, the restaurant is only outdoors, nice decoration, you can pay by card. It is in the courtyard of one of the ancient stone houses. The mussels were delicious with garlic bread made on the grill and the chicken with gorgonzola sauce (a really big portion) was also prepared on the outdoor grill. When the lady saw that I had splashed sauce on myself and was wiping it with a napkin, she immediately jumped up and gave me a large cloth napkin on my lap..well, if anyone is a pig :) We were all alone in the restaurant for some time and it seems a shame to squeeze into crowded restaurants on the main streets, when this one in the back was so great, definitely stop by there. Prices June 2023 - salads 10-15 Eur, pasta 13-28 Eur, the most expensive ones are with seafood and truffles, meat 15-28 Eur, steaks around 30 Eur, Mussels a la buzzara 15 Eur, fish platter for 2 people 55 Eur, etc., a huge selection, nice staff, delicious food, pleasant atmosphere in the shade, cold beer, no crowds, what more could you want in a restaurant!
