Hochkar

The Hochkar ski resort is located in Lower Austria in the Mostviertel ski region - which, in addition to Hochkar, also includes the Ötscher, Gemeindealpe and Annaberg ski areas.

Hochkar is the highest ski resort in Lower Austria (1808 m above sea level), which is why there is the greatest guarantee of snow. You can race on groomed slopes as well as in open terrain.

Hochkar is one of the closest Austrian ski areas from the Czech Republic. It is 470 km from Ostrava and less than 5 hours. Brno is of course closer, roughly 300 km and 3.5 hours, Prague 340 km and 4.5 hours. South Bohemia is the closest - approx. 200 km and a whole three hours. We were there on a weekend and there were quite a lot of people there, I recommend being there before nine o'clock to park comfortably at the top (the parking lot is free). It is not an area where I would like to ski for a week. It's quite small, the slopes are narrow and there are a lot of people on them, most were in the shade all day (in January), it was quite windy on the bare upper plains and there were queues for the lifts (but nothing drastic, mostly for about 5 minutes, it was a Saturday). Red pistes predominate and some are steeper, as we are used to in Austria, but they were excellently groomed and were not frozen even at -6 degrees. The area has several restaurants, mostly self-service with a nice selection and very reasonable prices compared to other larger areas. You can also stay directly at the top, there are several hotels near the slopes. So if you are going for 2-3 days and preferably over a week, good. For a week's skiing, I would choose a bigger resort, because when I skied the same slope for the fifth time, I got a little bored. But I'm a bit spoiled, it might be enough for others.

Hochkar in data:

Altitude: 1300 - 1808 m a.s.l.

Size of the ski resort: 19 km of slopes, mostly chairlifts, 1x double anchor, no cabin

Difficulty of slopes: 5.5 km blue, 10 km red, 3.5 km black

Night skiing: yes

Children's skiing: yes

Opening hours: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Price of ski pass for 1 day 2023/2024 on site: 61.5 Euro + 2 Euro refundable deposit. You can save up to 15% if you order them online. However, the guy in line behind us told us that he did it for an hour, he had to open a bottle of wine to do it, and in the end he didn´t make it anyway because they almost wanted his underwear size too :) so if you don't have the nerve for that, the line at 9 it was like that for 5 minutes on Saturday morning, you pay conveniently with a card and that's it.

If you are interested in accommodation in the vicinity of Hochkar, I recommend Ferienwohnung Lassing below the hill. They have 2 large family apartments for a good price, there were 5 of us ladies there and it was fine. The two-story apartment had its own fully equipped kitchen, a large bathroom including towels for everyone, a separate toilet, a large table in the kitchen for 6 people, a couch, downstairs there is one bedroom for two, and upstairs in the large attic room there was a double bed and an additional mattress, 4 people can sleep here comfortably, there was also a cot if you need it. The apartment also has a ski storage room with ski boot heating. The accommodation is isolated, there is nothing around, you have to drive to the town and to the slopes. It is 10 minutes 10 km to Hochkar. If you have bad weather, you can take a trip to the Lunzer lake, you can bypass the whole thing. There is also Interspar in the town of Lunz am See.

My rating of the area - 3/5
