Location

Hotel Jama is one of the best hotels in Slovenia and is located directly in the Postojna Cave Park, only a few steps away from the ticket office and the entrance to the cave. Although the cave is one of the most visited places in the world, the hotel enjoys a quiet location, surrounded by nature. The hotel was first opened in 1971, but underwent a complete renovation in 2020. The restored retro elements of the 1970s are combined with modern design, which perfectly complements the architectural connection with the cave.

Enjoy here more days. In addition to the park, the place is a great starting point for trips to other parts of Slovenia or to neighboring countries such as Italy and Croatia. Due to its location and size, the hotel is also used for large corporate events or weddings.

For us, Czechs (or for all going in the same direction), we are directly offered to visit this karst cave gem on the way to the sea to Croatia. Kids don't enjoy the long journey, so why not make them happy. Make your holiday more interesting and make a stop, the town of Postojna is right next to the A1 motorway, exit 41, 49 km southwest of Ljubljana. Visit the longest cave system in the world and take a cave train ride in it, then get to know the cave animals in Vivarium right next to the caves and 10 km further, the medieval Predjama Castle, an iconic building in the rocks, is definitely worth a stop.

We came here from the Czech Republic in the evening and spent two nights. We had enough time for all attractions in the park, and after the second night we continued fresh to Italy. Or, as I wrote above, to Croatia, in exactly the same way. Don't forget to refuel in Slovenia. In June 2022, there was the cheapest petrol on the way to Croatia. The same price 1.56 Euro was on all pumps, so it doesnt matter, if u take it in some town or at motorway.

You can read everything you can do in the park in the article:

The hotel reception is located on the first floor, but don't worry, there is an elevator, you don't have to go upstairs with suitcases. A red carpet was also prepared, unfortunately not for me :) You can't come by car directly in front of the entrance, the parking lot is located under the hotel, so you have to go a short distance to the hotel. On the first floor, in addition to the reception, there is a hotel restaurant with a large terrace, a bar and conference rooms. If you are interested in sitting on the terrace for dinner in the summer, I recommend book it in advance, otherwise you can have bad luck. The other restaurants in the complex have not been open for so long (they were only until 6 pm), so dinner is only possible at the hotel.

As already mentioned, the hotel has an excellent location, right in the heart of the park, right by the caves and right on the mini promenade. You don't have to worry about where to park, hotel guests have free parking and the car park is closest to the caves. You take a ticket and the hotel will then code it for you for free departure.

Rooms

The hotel has 156 comfortable modern rooms and all have air conditioning, wifi, TV, hairdryer, safe and minibar. You can choose from several types of rooms, from single and double to triple suites and family rooms, of various categories. There is even a small private gym in the most luxurious suite. You can also choose the view, either to the forest or to the park. I will comment on the Superior Triple Room, No. 1315 on the 3rd floor with a beautiful view of the park and the entrance to the caves. Cheaper rooms with forest views (do not have a balcony. They are also beautiful to sleep in, but balcony is always better. So our room had a large double bed and a sofa bed for a possible 3rd person. The room is really spacious, as well as the balcony, which is more like a terrace, with a table and chairs. The room had a large TV, wifi connection without password, minibar with water (extra charge), safe, wardrobes, jacket hangers and en-suite bathroom, which means it is more or less directly in the room. But don't worry, it is separated by a glass wall and there is a curtain on it, so if you don't want, you can't see the bathroom or the toilet from the room. The bathroom had a shower, shower gel with shampoo in one, hand soap, hair dryer, plenty of towels, basket, magnifying mirror. If you want more light for make-up, I recommend pulling back the curtain during the day and letting daylight into the bathroom. And fortunately, the room has good air conditioning, because in June it was outside 33 degrees and the rooms with balconies are facing the sun.

What I missed a bit in the hotel was some wellness, if you stay here longer, it might come in handy, because once the restaurants and shops on the promenade close at 6 pm, there's not much to do. We also missed charging an electric car in the hotel car park. But these are just the details that would please.

Tip

If you book a hotel directly on their website, see above (the site is in several world languages), you will have it for the best price and for the best possible park experience you will get a 10% discount on the package Complete park experience - in the package there are tickets to the cave, Predjama Castle, Vivarium and the Expo Cave Karst exhibition. In addition, you avoid queues at the ticket office. And the queues were also in June through the weekday, I would not want to stand there in the high season. Be sure to buy online. The cash registers are open from 9 am to 4 pm (June 2022).

Restaurants (not only in the hotel)

It is used quality seasonal food from local ingredients. You can book a room with either breakfast or half board. A rich buffet breakfast is served in the restaurant Čarobni vrt (Magic Garden) from 7-10 am (in summer until 10.30), and you have a beautiful view of the park, you can also have breakfast on the terrace. At breakfast you can choose from fruits, vegetables, sausages, eggs, cold cuts and cheeses, juices, teas, yoghurts, muesli, regular pastries and desserts. The coffee was dripped, but they can bring you espresso or any other coffee from the machine on request, at no extra charge. The staff of the restaurant was really very professional and very nice.

This restaurant is also open for dinner a la carte from 5 pm to 10 pm (until 11 pm in summer). At the same time, the hotel bar is open, where you can enjoy a wide range of local wines and other drinks. And we also received a welcome drink (you can choose from either champagne or juices). As a good Czech and beer lover, I was disappointed that they didn't have draft Slovenian beer :) For dinner a la carte you can choose from soups, hot and cold appetizers, salads, fish, meat, local specialties (those stuffed dumplings with lamb were excellent, name I unfortunately forgotten) and desserts.

Magdalena Food & Fun Restaurant is located next to the Jama Hotel. The so-called street food offers burgers (unfortunately only burgers, although about 20 types), craft beers, homemade lemonades and great coffee with Italian ice cream. The name is derived from the Magdalena Cave, and the non-traditional interior corresponds to this.

On the ground floor of the Jama Hotel there is a self-service restaurant Briljant and you can have soup, pizza, some of the lunch menus, pasta, salads, grilled delicacies and more. This restaurant is the largest and has the best selection. Wifi of course.

You can taste local cuisine at the Modrijan homestead with a mill by the Pivka River. Fresh homemade bread, ripe dried ham, cheese and Slovenian wine. Or homemade cakes for coffee. At the same time, you can see a mill, a water-powered sawmill and a residential building, where else do you have such a snack experience?

Next to the Postojna Cave is the magnificent Jamski Court, with typical Italian architecture. You can taste local specialties, Central European cuisine, fish and game.

The secret premises of the Hotel Jama

Due to the location of the hotel and when it was built, there are secret rooms in which interesting things took place during the former Yugoslavia. Until 1991, the hotel lived a double life and it was discovered in 2016, when the hotel began to be renovated. The secret premises of the hotel witnessed the activities of the former regime's secret services. A very specialized communication center is hidden deep in the hotel building. The hotel has therefore decided to organize tours of these secret rooms for those interested and it is up to you what you will believe. You can listen to authentic records of state security interceptions, look at the communications center, and other secret areas that no one has touched for 28 years. The rooms are preserved in their original condition. The educational tour lasts about 1.5 hours, either in English or Slovenian. It is suitable for people over 15 years of age and there can be a maximum of 6 people in a group. The tour is with a guide. The tour must be booked at least 3 days in advance and the ticket costs EUR 24.9 per person. Sounds definitely interesting, what do you say? Where else can you listen to authentic secret service recordings without special permission? We probably won't understand them much :)

So perhaps the review of the Jama Hotel and the Postojna Park with caves convinced you to visit, I definitely recommend it. You won't see so many of the world's most often in one place.

The article was created thanks to the kind cooperation of the PR department of Postojna Cave Park. Thank you.
